The water movement can affect betta’s swimming causing them to stress. Due to the presence of a long tail in these species, the water drags them whenever they try to swim causing them to stress more. A lot of stress in betta can lead them to prone diseases.
Below is the list of suitable and most used filters for Betta fish Tank which won’t cause them so much stress.
1. Under Gravel Filters
2. Hang on Filters
3. Sponge Filters
4. Canister Filters.
Under Gravel Filters: An underwater Gravel filters work as similar to the sponge filters and works best for Filters for betta fish. You can set up your Under Gravel Filters in two different ways. Either you can use a powerhead or you use an air pump to create a vacuum and suck the water inside the filter. Though they work with the help of a power head, it is not recommended, as the power heads create a lot of water movement in your tank that can prevent your fish from a free swim. On using an Airpump you can easily adjust your filters causing no water movement so that your Betta won’t be disturbed.
Hang on Filters: Hang on Filters may not be the right choice to set up in your tank as most of them have strong return flows causing your betta stress and difficult to swim. However, some filters used bio wheels and are designed to give beneficial bacteria a place to grow in your tank.
Sponge Filters for betta fish: Sponge Filters are very similar to the under Gravel Filters and works with the same mechanism. A power head or the water pumps helped the water to travel inside the pipe passing through a circular sponge that captures the dirt and ammonia from your water. This filter requires too much space to get installed and looks unattractive, but to keep your single betta inside a tank can be the best choice to use these kinds of filters.
Canister Filters for betta fish: As canister filters have control to the water flow, you can take the advantage of this feature in your filter to take care of the water flow in your tank. Since Bettas cannot swim against the strong current of water. You can control the flow of water to be slow and make sure you choose Canister filter that has adjustable return flows.
Beside Filters Betta Fish also need ideal water temperature in order to live and swim healthier. Many people have their betta fish staying still in the same position. This happens either due to the current of water inside your tank which is causing them stress or due to the inappropriate water temperature.
